Travel to Michigan... Why Not?
Mention MICHIGAN and most people think of cars, heavy industry and inner-city Detroit, not to mention the fact that Detroit won the murder capital award more than once. Midwesterners prefer to focus on its magnificent scenery, as opposed to its “nice” reputation. The beaches, dunes and cliffs along the 3,200-mile shoreline border four of the five Great Lakes. Many would rather drive through Colorado or amidst the Appalachian Mountains for a great view, but some may ask why not Michigan?
Our very own interconnected Great Lakes actually form the largest body of fresh water in the whole world. Our infamous great lakes known to school kids as H.O.M.E.S., consists of Lake Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie and Superior. Lake Superior alone is more than 300 miles from east to west. The shores of these inland seas can rival and compete with any coastline. Maybe one should think of visiting Michigan after all. Superior and the northern reaches of Lake Michigan offer stunning rocky peninsulas, craggy cliffs, tree-covered islands, mammoth dunes and deserted beaches like no other. For lengthy stretches along Lake Erie, and the bottom lips of lakes Michigan and Huron, however, sluggish waters lap against large cities and the unused wharves of decaying ports. Sounds pretty, huh? But that doesn’t mean there aren’t beautiful places to encounter, because there most certainly are.
The mitten-shaped Lower Peninsula is dominated from its southeastern corner by the industrial giant of Detroit, surrounded by satellite cities heavily devoted to the automotive industry. But in the west, the scenic 350-mile Lake Michigan shore drive passes through likeable little ports before reaching the stunning Sleeping Bear Dunes and resort towns such as Traverse City. From prior experience, the Sleeping bear dunes are truly a sight to see. I once thought that there wasn’t much to Michigan as far as traveling goes, but I was truly wrong. These gigantic mounds and heaps of sand are remarkable and encompass a 30-mile stretch of Lake Michigan’s eastern coastline.
